Kidding Around

-- Gifts and Dec, 2/1/2010 12:00:00 AM

Toys garner 19 percent of spending on kids 14 and under, according to “Spotlight on Kids Understanding Cross Category Purchasing,” by The NPD Group. Under 8, that number rises to 29 percent. Only 45 percent of spending on children was driven by a child's request. Most gift and home categories, including baby products, arts & crafts and room decor, were among those least likely to be requested. Women spent 55 percent of the total, but when men shopped they spent 19 percent more. Parents spent 57 percent; grandparents 20. Displays were most effective for arts & crafts, books and party supplies.
