Colonial Candle
Marking 100 years of illuminating style

It is not often that a company survives the ups and downs of business and the economy to reach its centennial, but when that does occur, it is cause for celebration. And in 2009, Colonial Candle is one such company that will be celebrating that milestone.
Like many independent enterprises, Colonial Candle sprang from modest beginnings. It was founded in 1909 by Mabel Baker, a schoolteacher in Hyannis, MA. Baker, inspired by stories of the early colonists making candles from the native bayberries, used the same process to make candles as holiday gifts. Her candles were so successful, that to meet demand, she began to sell through shops on Cape Cod.
In 1921, Baker's husband joined the business; together they built their first factory and continued to grow the business by marking many "firsts," such as developing candles fragranced with scented oils. Until her death in 1965, Mabel Baker remained active in her company.
Today, Colonial Candle continues as one of the leading candlemakers and innovators under the umbrella of Blythe Inc., which acquired the company in 1990 and put it under its Midwest division in 2005.
Colonial will mark its anniversary with special candle release and events at summer markets.
